When you've experienced trauma there can be a cycle of grief that you settle into knowingly and unknowingly. The greatest example of this for me personally was with the loss of my father more than five years ago. I am truly amazed at how my body recalls and processes the grief on some specific days of the year. So I've implemented a process that I learned in Life Coaching called "Shifting the Narrative."
This process allows you the freedom and empowerment to tell your story from a more positive perspective or to change the story all together so that you can break the cycle of pain that sometimes keeps people stuck in misery for years. Sometimes you can think your way right out of depression. Sometimes more is required but at any rate, positive thinking will always be a help. So here's just one example of how to shift the narrative for yourself.
A few years ago I learned of the true story behind Valentine's Day and the practices of St. Valentine. I wasn't happy with what now was playing in the back of my mind every time I heard Happy Valentine's Day. And my conscience would reply, "no it's not" as I thought of the origins of that phrase. So this year, as I've done with many things over the past few years, I'm shifting the narrative. I want to think of LOVE, HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS and PROMOTE HEALING. So I said to myself, "why not celebrate the true energy of love that comes from the Heart Chakra?" The color is green and thus you have the birth of a new narrative of love. I'm not taking anything away from those who still wish to celebrate Valentine's Day. But I will provide an alternative for those of a more conscious mind to create a more intentional habit. So enjoy this day and all the healthy love and healing it may bring.
